Many people suffer from sinusitis and blocked sinuses. The condition can leave you feeling stuffy, sniffly, and headachey.

However, with a sinus treatment in Ayurveda, you can put sinus problems behind you for good. Let’s take a look at how a naturopathy treatment for sinusitis can cure your symptoms.

What Is Sinusitis?

Before we dive into Ayurveda for sinusitis, let’s talk about what sinusitis actually is. Sinusitis is an infection of the sinuses that causes swelling throughout the sinus canals. It can be caused by viruses, bacteria, or even fungi.

The sinuses are four activities locate throughout the head and known as the paranasal sinuses. These passages drain mucus out of the nose to help prevent bacteria from building up. The passages are located:

  • Behind the eyebrows and forehead
  • Alongside the bridge of the nose
  • Behind the nose
  • Inside the cheekbones

When a person has sinusitis, the mucus doesn’t drain properly from these canals. This can lead to discomfort in the face and head.

What Causes Sinusitis?

There are several different factors that can cause sinusitis. All of these factors lead to a buildup of fluid in the sinus cavities and subsequent bacterial growth.

Viruses

Most times, sinusitis in adults is caused by viruses. Viruses associated with colds, the flu, and other diseases can lead to sinusitis.

Bacteria

Another common cause of sinusitis in adults is bacteria. Bacteria build up in the sinuses and lead to infection.

Pollutants

Pollutants and chemicals in the air can lead to a build-up of mucus in the sinuses. This, in turn, results in sinusitis.

Fungi

Fungi in the air can cause allergic sinusitis. Or, fungi can be directly introduced into the naval cavities, leading to sinusitis.

What Are the Symptoms of Sinusitis?

Sinusitis is characterised by several common symptoms. These symptoms include:

  • Headaches
  • Bad breath
  • Fever
  • Post-nasal drip
  • Sore throat
  • Pressure and pain in the face
  • Swelling and tenderness in the face
  • Tooth, eye, and ear pain
  • Cough
  • Fatigue
  • Sneezing and itching
  • Chronic sinusitis
  • Ulceration

If you notice that you have any of these symptoms, it’s a good idea to visit a doctor to make sure that you don’t have sinusitis. Otherwise, you may find yourself with symptoms that you can’t get rid of.

What Are the Different Types of Sinusitis?

There are several different types of sinusitis that people suffer from. Each type of sinusitis has different implications for the patient.

Acute Sinusitis

Acute sinusitis is caused by a viral infection and usually companies cold symptoms. This type of sinusitis only lasts for a few weeks and is often caused by allergies or a cold.

Subacute Sinusitis

People suffering from Subacute sinusitis typically experience symptoms for three months or less. This type of sinusitis is caused by seasonal allergies or bacterial infections.

Chronic Sinusitis

Chronic sinusitis is caused by nasal polyps, swelling of the sinus lining, or infection. These symptoms last longer than three months but are less severe. Most of the time, chronic sinusitis is caused by bacterial infections.

Infected Sinusitis

Uncomplicated virus infections are the root cause of infected sinusitis. Both chronic and subacute sinusitis arise when infected sinusitis is not properly treated.

Non-Infectious Sinusitis

When someone has sinusitis because of allergies or external irritants, it is called non-infectious sinusitis. This type of sinusitis can last for up to three months at a time.

What Is Ayurveda for Sinusitis?

People who choose to treat sinusitis with Ayurvedic therapies will usually undergo therapies that resemble Suryavarta. The main dosha involved in this type of treatment is vata dosa and kapha dosa.

According to Ayurvedic texts, Shleshhaka Kapha mixes with the waste products in the sinus area. This creates a sticky, toxic mucus known as Shleshma which imbalances both the sub-doshas in the area.

What Are the Different Ayurvedic Treatments for Sinusitis?

In Ayurvedic treatments for sinusitis, the naturopath softens and expels the aggravated doshas. They use a special diet, ayurvedic herbs, and nasal therapies to do so.

Nasya

One method of clearing the sinuses is to use a panchakarma treatment called Nasya. In this therapy, a naturopath administers oils, herbs, and herbal powders through the nostrils to dissolve and loosen lodged mucus in the nasal passages.

Following the administration of these herbs, the provider conducts a vigorous massage on sinus areas. Then, the provider applies medicated steam to the face and head while the patient inhales the vapors.

Ayurvedic Herbs and Medicines

Another herbal sinus infection treatment that can be used is special medicines accompanied by a cleansing exercise. This treatment is made out of herbs that build immunity and help provide instant relief from congestion, headaches, and heaviness in the face. It works by balancing the Shkleshaka Kapha and the Prana Vata through a pacifying diet.

With this treatment, the patient will eat lukewarm foods and drink water mixed with spices. This helps to purify the toxins in the sinuses.

Additionally, in this treatment, the patient should use steam to help loosen mucus in the sinus passages. They should also detoxify to re-balance the environment in the sinus passages.
